Screening of Il Moro/The Moor with writer/director Daphne Di Cinto

Daphne Di Cinto will screen her short film, Il Moro/The Moor, a period drama based on the life of Alessandro de’ Medici, the first Black head of state in modern western world, on Monday, October 23, 2023 at 5pm in the Kelley Center presentation room.  Named Duke of the Florence in 1530, Alessandro was the son of Pope Clement VII (formerly Cardinal Giulio de’ Medici) and Simonetta da Collevecchio, a servant woman of African descent. Nicknamed il Moro on account of his skin tone, the Duke ruled until his assassination in 1537. 

Writer and director Di Cinto, who is a Black Italian like Alessandro de' Medici, will speak about her award-winning debut in a Q&A session following the screening of her 22-minute film. She began her artistic career as an actor, most famously as Sarah Basset, the Duchess of Hastings, in the Netflix series Bridgerton.  Di Cinto looks forward to discussing the many parallels she sees between our time and that of 16^th century Florence under Alessandro de’ Medici’s rule. This film not only describes a historical reality but also asks questions for our time about identity, privilege, race, power and oppression.

We are very fortunate to have the opportunity to host Daphne Di Cinto during her travels in the United States this fall to promote her short film.
