Global Fairfield: The African Continent

Students interested in attending a semester-long program in Africa, have several options through our approved partner programs.

Sibanye Semester Program in Capetown, South Africa, with our Jesuit Partner Marquette University

Marquette's South Africa Service Learning Program is based in cosmopolitan Cape Town, at the southern tip of the African continent. The Sibanye Cape Town program, in conjunction with the University of the Western Cape, builds upon Marquette’s strong tradition of service learning. The program offers students the unique opportunity to increase their understanding of the people, history, culture and traditions of South Africa through integrated academic course work and direct immersion into the culture through community-based service.

This program is attractive to students studying a variety of disciplines from history to political science to international studies. Throughout the semester, students enroll in five courses, two of which are designed specifically for program participants: Crossing Boundaries: Bridging the Racial Divide - South Africa and Race, Class, Gender and Local Communities. Students then choose the addition three courses from University of the Western Cape curriculum.

When studying with SFS students will be supporting a team of experienced research scientists who will push students to get creative in their work to understand the critical environmental issues of our time. We like how their tagline, “Our planet is home to an incredible diversity of life and depends on the next generation of environmental leaders to protect its future – will you be one of them?” supports our mission to create Global Leaders for a better tomorrow. Students with majors or minors in archeology, biology, environmental studies, international studies and zoology would find the academics a perfect fit.
