"The Irish in Film"

"The Irish in Film," the free movie series sponsored by Fairfield University's Irish Studies Program, will be held this fall on October 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th. The series, now in its 16th year, will present four diverse films each introduced by a faculty member who teaches in the Irish Studies minor.
The films will be shown in the Multimedia Room of the University's DiMenna-Nyselius Library on Wednesday evenings at 7 P.M. The public is invited.
The series begins on October 4th with "The Dead" (1987). The film is based on the final story of the same title in James Joyce's short story collection "Dubliners." Directed by John Huston, the film is set in Dublin at an annual party on the Feast of the Epiphany during which the Dublin guests -- Joyce's living dead -- dance, drink, dine, talk, tell stories, recite poetry, argue and sing. At the party's end, Gabriel (Donal McCann) who is married to Gretta (Anjelica Huston) spend the night at a Dublin hotel, where she tells him about a boy in Galway who died for her. The result is Gabriel's epiphany, perhaps Joyce's most famous piece of writing.
Dr. Nels Pearson, Chair of the English Department and former Director of the Irish Studies Program, will introduce the film and field questions from the
audience afterwards.
