The series concludes with "Black 47" (2018), a film about Ireland's Great Famine (1845-1849). The Famine occurred when the potato crop failed due to a fungus, causing about a million deaths from starvation, disease, and fever. The film stars James Frecheville as Feeney, who returns home to western Ireland in 1847-- the worst year of the Famine -- to find death and devastation. Feeney seeks revenge against all he holds responsible: from soldiers, policemen, rent collectors to the powerful landlord. Stephen Rea plays Connelly, sort of the local storyteller, observing Feeney's actions from the sidelines.
Dr. William Abbott, History Department and Co-Director of the Irish Studies Program, will introduce the film and field the audience's questions.
The Irish film series is free and open to the public. Light refreshments
