Peace Corps Prep Program Info Session

The Peace Corps Prep Program prepares student participants to be successful applicants to a variety of opportunities in the field of global development. Participants select one or two primary sectors: health, environment, education, agriculture, community economic development, or youth in development. They will complete requirements in academic and technical skills, leadership, career readiness, language skills, and intercultural competence. Students from all majors and all class years are welcome to join the program. Participants receive a certificate of preparation from the US Peace Corps, but are not required to apply. With this certificate, they will be prepared to apply at any point in their lives.
The info session today will focus on the specifics of the Peace Corps Prep Program and the Jesuit Volunteer Corps with guest speakers Bridget Mulkerin '17 skyping in from her site in Senegal, and AJ Golio, recruiter for JVC. Students will also be briefly introduced to similar opportunities like Americorps, Teach for America, Global Health Corps, World Teach, Catholic Medical Mission Board, the Fulbright Scholarship, the Foreign Service, and other opportunities to teach abroad.
The Peace Corps trains volunteers in language and technical skills during a three month pre-service program. Volunteers typically serve for two years in their host country. All travel and living costs are covered by a living stipend, health care is provided, and federal loans are deferred. Returned Peace Corps Volunteers receive a readjustment allowance, preferred federal hiring, networking services, and are eligible to apply to the Coverdell Fellowship, a tuition reduced or waived graduate school program offered to RPCVs at 251 universities throughout the country, for the rest of their lives.
