Better Understanding Our Students

Educators who understand the specifics of adolescent brain development as a component of classroom management have the opportunity to create a positive culture with potentially greater academic success. Based on brain imaging studies of social, emotional, and cognitive development, researchers have identified the elements that students need to increase positive outcomes during their college careers. Among these elements are emotional and academic safety, the building of positive relations with professional staff, and the development of resiliency through a growth-oriented mind set. This discussion will also include findings regarding external sources of student failure (dorm conflicts, sleep deficits, drug and alcohol abuse), as well as internal sources (negative mood states, e.g., depression and anxiety) with recommendations for staff interactions based on current research findings.
