A panel of innovative scholars will share their research interests along with tips and insights to help researchers move from big ideas to researchable questions and methods aligned to facilitate exploration.

This event is cosponsored by the College of Arts & Sciences Fredrickson Family Innovation Lab and the Center for Social Impact.  A recording of the event will be made available for ongoing use in classes.

About our panelists:

Michael Andreychik, Professor of Psychology, is a social and personality psychologist. His professional interests center on better understanding and nurturing the psychological bases of positive interpersonal and intergroup relations, applying psychological science to debias decision-making processes, working to improve the methods and practices of psychological science, and applying empirical approaches to improve teaching and learning.  He uses a variety of methods in his research -- traditional survey approaches; computer-based approaches that employ implicit, reaction-time measures; ecological momentary assessment; longitudinal approaches; and even a (very) little bit of qualitative stuff.

Mehmet Cansoy, Assistant Professor of Sociology & Anthropology, studies how technological changes intersect with social inequalities. Most of his current work has been focused on the platform economy, studying its impacts on workers, consumers and the environment. In his research, Dr. Cansoy uses large datasets collected with web scraping and other automated data collection practices and a large range of quantitative tools, in addition to conventional qualitative methods.

Tanika Eaves, Assistant Professor of Social Work, has been a Licensed Clinical Social Worker for over 20 years and is an Infant Mental Health Specialist. Her clinical experience includes: child and family guidance clinics, early intervention programs, early childhood mental health consultation, policy work, parent-infant psychotherapy, and training/consultation with home visiting clinicians. Through mixed-methods research, Dr. Eaves investigates individual and organizational factors related to work-related stress management among front-line and supervising infant mental health practitioners.

Nicole Marino, as a Digital Scholarship Librarian, provides research services to students, faculty, and staff.  She also promotes experimentation with and use of digital methods to both enhance and critique traditional practices of scholarly communication from inquiry to research to curation, publication, and presentation. Nicole believes engaging with methods such as digital exhibition and publishing, crowdsourcing, mapping, and text and network analysis can give students insight into and experience with information creation, authority, and the scholarly conversation as both consumers and producers of information.

Join us for a humanitarian mapping initiative that uses technology to plot the geography of remote, unmapped regions of the world in order to assist international relief organizations in disaster response and risk reduction.  Participants will learn to edit OpenStreetMap, an open data map, to support global disaster response and risk reduction. Come to learn how to use Tableau Public, one of the most powerful and intuitive (and free) data visualization tools to turn your research into engaging visual stories. Your instructor, Dr. Lei "Tommy" Xie, will guide you through the process of data-driven storytelling by extracting hidden trends in massive data and layering various analytical views to provide your audience with an interactive dashboard for data exploration and presentation.
