“Project X” by Judy Tate is a new work commissioned by Theatre Fairfield as part of The Lucille Lortel Festival of New Plays. “Project X” is directed by new guest artist Godfrey L. Simmons Jr. The piece tackles issues of social injustice found on Fairfield University’s campus and calls the current population of Fairfield to do better. The piece is a clean and concise summary of hundreds of interviews, surveys, and conversations between the show’s artistic team and the Fairfield University community, including current students, alumni, and staff and faculty of the university.

“I was fascinated by how active Fairfield alumni were about Fairfield’s past,” Simmons stated, “whether that be about how previous slave holders’ names being used to name certain Fairfield landmarks or President Nemec’s initial response to the killing of George Floyd.” Simmons himself has been attached to the project since the beginning, serving as one of the core members of the artistic team during the creation process of “Project X.”

Simmons spoke more about the piece saying, “To me, “Project X” is a question — it’s a core question about what you are going to do with your time?” He went on to say, “I hope the audience walks away asking what “we” means to them. Does their understanding of “we” really reach everyone, or does their understanding of “we” refer to the small crowd they know?” For more information on how “Project X” was formed and for dramaturgy work, visit www.theatre-fairfield.org
