When Fr. Arturo Sosa was elected Superior General of the Jesuits at their 36th General Congregation, he was given the mandate to undertake a careful discernment that would lead to selecting specific orientations to direct the work of Jesuits and Jesuit-inspired institutions for the next ten years.
On February 19, 2019, Fr. Sosa, in a letter to Jesuits and their companions, announced the four “Universal Apostolic Preferences” (hereafter “UAPs”) which, according to Fr. Sosa, are intended to be a dynamic path that can guide us forward, responding to God’s call to a deeper conversion and a deeper renewal. As Father Sosa puts it: "Our ten-year framework has begun; it will not leave the Society unchanged. We will be different in 2029 than we are now. We desire, after these ten years, to be more in tune with the cries of our world, closer to each other and to our partners, more at the side of Christ and closer to Him."
Fr. Sosa is eager that these UAPs be shared with our partners in mission, so that the entire extended Ignatian family might be able to understand, support and collaborate in achieving the goals set by Fr. General, and approved by Pope Francis. On November 2, we invite our alumni, faculty, and staff, truly sharers of our Jesuit mission, to participate in a Zoom discussion of the UAPs, facilitated by Fr. Gerry Blaszczak. Fr. Blaszczak will offer some background information on the development of the UAPs and discuss how Fairfield University is endeavoring to respond to the call of the Church and the Society to implement them.
