Sound Motion

How might sound and motion live together in dance? What excites the ear and the eye? What troubles them? What traditions inform how we invent in these art forms today? Choreographers, Peter Kyle and Rachna Agrawal, both Trinity College Department of Theater and Dance faculty members, are joined in a panel with their musical collaborators James Bigbee Garver, and Shahzad Anjum to explore these and other creative questions surrounding the wondrous partnership between music and dance. The program will conclude with a Q & A with the artists.  

Artist Biographies

Peter Kyle is a dancer, choreographer, teacher, filmmaker, and Artistic Director of Peter Kyle Dance, based in Hartford, CT, where he teaches at Trinity College. He toured the world with Nikolais and Murray Louis Dance and has also performed in the companies of Mark Morris, Erick Hawkins, Gina Gibney, Laura Glenn and the theater company P3/east. He has received numerous grants and awards for his work, including from American Music Center, US Embassies in China and Ukraine, Mertz Gilmore Foundation, NYFA and the Fulbright Specialist Program. He regularly works internationally, most recently in Ukraine.

Performer, choreographer, educator, and a published author Rachna Ramya is on the teaching faculty at Trinity College and the Artistic Director of the Sumbhaav School of Kathak Dance. She has published a book on her dance form, titled “Kathak: The Dance of Storytellers”. Rachna is the recipient of the “2020/2021 Distinguished Achievement in Dance Award,” awarded by the Connecticut Dance Alliance.

Shahzad Anjum is a North Indian classical singer, music scholar, and composer from Pakistan. He currently is residing in Philadelphia and working on his upcoming books on music. His musical compositions are admired widely in the fields of classical vocal, ghazal, and church music.

James Bigbee Garver has over 15 years of experience designing interactive audio experiences, composing music, creating sound designs for podcasts, live performance, films, & art installations. He works primarily with composed sound and the spoken word, often mixing the timbres of acoustic instruments and human voices with synthetic audio to sculpt imagined textures and environments. His music has been heard Off Broadway, at three different Smithsonian Museums, and at some of the most prestigious venues in the US (The Apollo Theatre, Film Society of Lincoln Center, BAM, PS-122, Joyce Theatre). He has also served as Voice Editor and consulted on artificial voice projects at Microsoft Research and Descript. Garver is based in upstate New York. More information at bigbee.org.
