Fredrickson Family Innovation Lab - Heidi Neilson: "Global Perspective From Local Standpoint: DIY Art-Based Earth Observations" - Wednesday, September 22 at 7:00 PM
Date: 09-22-2021
Time: 07:00 PM
Artist Heidi Neilson will present recent projects which situate the local experience of land and landscape into a planet-wide scope by connecting with Earth's orbiting satellites. Her interdisciplinary approach using sculpture, radio transmissions, antennas, sound, and video is traced through particular pieces, such as a dynamic mechanical sculpture which continually points at the moon, site-specific custom-made antennas, and installation works which articulate Earth's orbital spaces as sound.
Heidi Neilson is an interdisciplinary artist whose work explores connections between people on the ground and off-planet conditions and infrastructure. She is currently co-operating Here GOES Radiotelescope, a sculptural receiving station for transmissions from a geosynchronous NOAA weather satellite, and mining the volumes of data collected for a variety of projects. Born in Oregon, Neilson received a BA in biology from Reed College and an MFA in painting from Pratt Institute. She is currently a Lecturer in the School of Art and Design at Purchase College, and lives and works in New York City. Her ham radio call sign is KD2ESI.
