The Magis Core Lecture, “Gender Matters in Black Lives Matter,” with Dr. Gwendolyn Pough, March 25, 2021 at 5:00-6:15 p.m.

The Magis Core Lecture, “Gender Matters in Black Lives Matter,” will be held online with Dr. Gwendolyn Pough, at 5:00-6:15 p.m. on March 25, 2021. The discussion will consider recent events related to incarceration and police practices at the intersection of race, gender, sexuality, and ability. Dr. Pough will also be joined by Dr. Kim Gunter and Dr. Kris Sealey in conversation about her work and the role the Magis core plays in preparing students to engage in issues of contemporary social and political life. Dr. Elizabeth Petrino, Director of the Magis Core, will moderate the discussion.

Dr. Gwendolyn D. Pough is Dean's Professor of the Humanities, William P. Tolley Distinguished Teaching Professor in the Humanities and Chair of the Department of Women's and Gender Studies at Syracuse University. She is the author of Check It While I Wreck It: Black Womanhood, Hip‐Hop Culture and the Public Sphere (Northeastern UP, 2004) and numerous articles on Black feminism, hip‐hop culture and African‐American rhetoric. She has published several romance novels under the pen‐name Gwyneth Bolton. She is currently completing a book‐length project on Black women's book clubs and reading groups.

The Magis Core Lecture is designed to highlight a nationally recognized scholar whose work emanates from an area of the core, employs an interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary perspective, and comments on contemporary national or global issues. A common read and film, among other activities, will accompany the lecture and provide an opportunity for students to understand the larger goal of humanistic inquiry and its potential to transform society.
