CAS Dean's Lecture Series with Suzanne Nossel

The College of Arts and Sciences has invited Suzanne Nossel, Executive Director of PEN America, to give a talk, "Whose Freedom, Whose Speech:  Free Speech in the Age of Trump," in the Dean’s Lecture Series on Monday, March 11 at 5 p.m. in the Dolan School of Business Dining Room. Ms. Nossel is an advocate of academic freedom, human rights, and First Amendment issues, and she has been active in the area of international diplomacy and free expression. Please announce this event to your students and encourage them to attend.

Suzanne Nossel is a leading voice on free expression issues in the US and globally, writing and being interviewed frequently for national and international media outlets. Her prior career spanned government service and leadership roles in the corporate and non-profit sectors. She has served as the Chief Operating Officer of Human Rights Watch and as Executive Director of Amnesty International USA. During the first term of the Obama Administration, Nossel served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for International Organizations, where she led US engagement in the United Nations and multilateral institutions, on human rights and humanitarian issues. During the Clinton Administration, Nossel was Deputy to the US Ambassador for UN Management and Reform at the U.S. Mission to the United Nations, where she was the lead negotiator in settling US arrears to the world body. She is a former senior fellow at the Century Foundation, the Center for American Progress, and the Council on Foreign Relations. Nossel is a magna cum laude graduate of both Harvard College and Harvard Law School.

In addition, there will be another event for students sponsored by PEN America. "Speak Up: A Student Dialogue on Free Speech and Inclusion at Fairfield University," will be held on March 26, 11:30-1:30 p.m., Dogwood Room, Barone Campus Center. In today's polarized environment, can we still talk across our differences? Jonathan Friedman and Adeline Lee, coordinators at PEN America for free speech initiatives, will be hosting a lively debate on free speech and discuss strategies for promoting effective dialogue across difference.
