Grief, Mourning, and Contemporary Art (Part II)
with Patricia Miranda

In this two-part lecture/workshop, artist, curator and educator Patricia Miranda will speak through the lens of art to both individual and collective ideas around grief, loss, mourning, solastalgia, and "homesickness". She will place this work and these ideas in the context of the challenges we face with COVID-19 and the Black Lives Matter movement. The first session will introduce the work of artists engaging in the themes of grief, loss and mourning; the second will discuss how the tools of art and diplomacy can help us effectively engage in the difficult conversations of our time.

Patricia Miranda is founder and director of MAPSpace and The Crit Lab. She currently teaches curatorial studies in the grad program at Western Colorado University, and was faculty at Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts from 2005-19. She led the first study abroad program at the university's campus in Prato, Italy. From 2015-20 she was core faculty at New Hampshire Institute of Art's low-residency MFA program. She served as director and curator of the Gallery at Concordia College-NY from 2008-12. Miranda develops education programs for K-12, museums, and institutions, including Franklin Furnace, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the American Museum of Natural History, and the Smithsonian Institution.
