NEH Summer Stipend Opportunity

We are so pleased to announce that Julie Peters has joined Fairfield University as Director of Pre-Award Administration in the Office of Sponsored Research and Programs (OSRP).  Julie brings with her a wealth of experience and expertise that will advance our efforts to support staff and faculty research. A more formal announcement will be forthcoming about the new team in a restructured OSRP.  Julie will be supporting faculty who apply to the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH).

NEH has recently announced guidelines for the Summer Stipends program to support outstanding and advanced humanities research in all disciplines and fields. These projects can be valuable to scholars, general readers, or both. The program supports projects at any stage of development, although these small grants are often most useful at the early research stage or at the end of the writing process.

Faculty members teaching full-time at colleges or universities must be nominated by their institutions to apply for a NEH Summer Stipend. Once faculty members are nominated by their institutions, they may submit their applications via Grants.gov. Each college and university in the United States and its jurisdictions may nominate two faculty members. Non-tenure track faculty and staff are also eligible to apply and exempt from nomination. The Summer Stipends program provides $6,000 to support continuous full-time work on a humanities project for a period of performance of two consecutive months. Projects may begin as early as May 1, 2021 and not later than September 1, 2022.  

The following are the steps for applying:

 

Step 1: Submit your draft narrative, single-spaced and a maximum of three pages, to Julie Peters, Director of Pre-Award Grants Administration, at jpeters@fairfield.edu by August 21, 2020.

 

Step 2: All draft narratives will be reviewed by Jocelyn Boryczka, Associate Vice Provost for Scholarly, Creative, and Community Engagement, and Richard Greenwald, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences by August 28, 2020.

 

Step 3: Faculty will be notified regarding nomination outcomes by August 31, 2020.  

 

Step 4: Julie Peters in the Office of Sponsored Research and Programs will provide assistance with the application requirements, registration, and submission process via grants.gov.

 

Step 5: For nominated faculty, the final proposal due to NEH is September 23, 2020.
