Diane Feigenson Lecture in Jewish Literature - “Guilt, Memory, and the Beta-God: Nathan Englander on kaddish.com”
Date: 03-05-2020
Time: 07:30 PM
Location: Oak Room, Barone Campus Center
The Diane Feigenson Lecture in Jewish Literature, titled “Guilt, Memory, and the Beta-God: Nathan Englander on kaddish.com,” will be held on Thursday, March 5 2020, at 7:30 p.m., in the Barone Campus Center Oak Room.
Kaddish.com is a hilarious black comedy about a formerly-religious, secular Jew named Larry who, after his father dies, goes to the website kaddish.com and pays someone to fulfill his obligation to recite the mourner's prayer (the kaddish) every day for eleven months. Twenty years later, Larry has become Shuly - an ultra-Orthodox rabbi who surreptitiously goes on line in an attempt to buy back his obligation. In this lecture, Englander will read passages from Kaddish.com and discuss its major themes including guilt, memory, and the intersection of faith and technology. There will be a Q & A and book signing.
The Feigenson Lectureship honors Diane Feigenson’s cherished memory and legacy of contributions during her twenty years on the faculty of the English Department at Fairfield.
The lecture is free and open to the public. To make a reservation, please contact the Bennett Center at bennettcenter@fairfield.edu or call (203) 254-4000, ext. 2066.
