National Engineer’s Week (2/16-2/22) – School of Engineering, Fairfield University

Ø  Theme: “Industry 4.0 – The Fourth Industrial Revolution”

v  Haishuai Wang: “Artificial Intelligence for Computational Healthcare and Precision Medicine” 

v  Murray Patterson: “Algorithmic and artificial intelligence approaches to the latest bioinformatics challenges”

v  Mehdi Safari: “High Performance Computing in Energy and Propulsion Systems”

v  Isaac Macwan: "Nanofabrication Strategies and Interactions at the Nano/Bio Interface"

Ø  Student Organization projects:

 ·      On Thursday, February 20, the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) and the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) will be working with a group of local high school students during an outreach event.

 ·       BMES will be with the group from 10:00 am -- 12:00 pm in the Lower Level BCC for their activity. Here is their pitch:  A fully engineered and interactive "Frankenstein" body with detailed models of body parts and internal organs will be officially released to the public. Quests and games for visitors will be organized and there will even be a chance to design your own body part using the provided materials! "Technology [is] blurring the lines between physical, digital, and biological spheres." -- Klaus Schwab (Founder and Executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum) 

·         After a 30 minute lunch break, SWE will take over and have their event from 12:30 -- 1:30 pm (since the students will have to be back at school for 2:00 pm). Here is their idea:

·        SWE will be teaching high school students what it means to be an engineer by taking them through the engineering process! Through this interactive demonstration, students will learn how teamwork, communication, adaptability, and problem-solving all come together to achieve the common goal by working in small groups to build a LEGO structure. Their goal is to show this next generation of kids how important soft skills interplay with engineering. “The Fourth Industrial Revolution is still in its nascent state. ·        Engineers Without Borders (EWB) will be hosting their Annual Cultural Night (date and time TBD). Since EWB's international projects are based in South America, they will be bringing a taste of their culture to us! They will explore South American culture and what makes South American such a unique place in the world-- it will be a night of food, games and activities, raffles, and fun! One of the goals of the Fourth Industrial Revolution is to use engineering to make the world a better place, which is exactly what EWB aims to do with their local and international projects.

·        On Friday, February 21, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) will be having an event in the Lower Level BCC from 2-4 where the club will have a few different activities set up, like DIY acrylic stags, as well as sharing information about their club and upcoming events/collaborations with the Computer Science department.

·        The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) will be hosting their event (date and time TBD) entitled Commemorating Black Engineers: Modern Innovations. This event will highlight engineers of color who have created or directly contributed to Industry 4.0. It will also highlight engineers who have worked on inventions that affect people and have further developed or improved the modern era.
