March 18: Film Screening & Discussion: A Thousand Pines - Award-Winning Documentary on Immigration and Labor

Date: 03-18-2025

Time: 04:00 PM

Location: Library Auditorium

The International Studies and International Business program invites you to a special screening and discussion of the award-winning documentary, A Thousand Pines, on Tuesday, March 18 at 4:00 pm in the Library Auditorium.

A Thousand Pines is a powerful and intimate look at the lives of Mexican temporary guest workers who work to replenish harvested forests across the United States. Through the lens of Raymundo Morales and his crew of 12 Oaxacan workers, the film explores the intersection of immigration, labor, family, and the environment.

The essential role immigrant workers play in the U.S. economy has sparked significant debate. A Thousand Pines sheds light on the underappreciated contributions of these workers, whose labor not only sustains industries like forestry but also supports broader environmental efforts. The film also highlights the challenges surrounding the types of legal status available to temporary workers, such as H-2B visas, and how these programs shape their lives and experiences.

Following the film, there will be an in-person Q & A with the filmmaker, Dr. Noam Osband. This is a unique opportunity to meet the filmmaker and learn more about the making of the documentary and its hidden immigrant story of American forestry.

Pizza & refreshments will be served.

Co-sponsored by Sociology & Anthropology, Department of Visual and Performing Arts, Environmental Studies, Humanitarian Action, the Center for Social Impact, and LLACS.

We hope to see you there!
