A pioneer in 4D materials science, he studies deformation in advanced materials at both bulk and small scales, having authored over 300 journal publications and co-authored the textbook Metal Matrix Composites. Prof. Chawla is a fellow of ASM International and has received prestigious accolades, including the Acta Materialia Silver Medal (2017) and Sigma Xi Distinguished Lecturer Award (2022–2023). He has held editorial positions, including a decade-long tenure with Materials Science and Engineering A.
