Exploring STEM OPT and Support for International Students

We are pleased to share important information about STEM Optional Practical Training (STEM OPT) and how Global Fairfield assists our international students in navigating this opportunity, even after graduation.

What is STEM OPT?

STEM OPT extends the Optional Practical Training (OPT) period for students who have completed a degree in a designated Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) field. Eligible students can apply for a 24-month extension of their post-completion OPT, allowing them to gain additional work experience in their field.

Who Qualifies for STEM OPT?

To qualify for STEM OPT, students must meet the following criteria:

1.       Current OPT Status: Students must be currently on a valid OPT and have completed a degree in a STEM field from an accredited institution.

2.       Designated Degree: The degree must be on the Department of Homeland Security’s list of eligible STEM fields.

3.       Employer Requirements: Students must work for an employer enrolled in the E-Verify program.

How Global Fairfield Assists International Students

Global Fairfield is dedicated to supporting international students throughout their STEM OPT journey, even after they have graduated. Our office offers:

·         Guidance on Application Process: We provide detailed information on eligibility requirements and the application process for STEM OPT, ensuring that students are well-prepared.

·         Ongoing Support: Our office maintains contact with international students for up to three years after graduation. We are here to answer questions, provide resources, and offer assistance as needed.

·         Workshops and Information Sessions: Throughout each semester, we conduct workshops and information sessions focused on STEM OPT, helping students understand the requirements and process. Students are encouraged to reach out about nine months into their OPT to begin their STEM OPT application.

We encourage all eligible international students to take advantage of the STEM OPT opportunity to further their careers and gain valuable work experience in the U.S.
