Please join us for an event with Dr. Jennifer Leeman, Professor of Spanish Linguistics from George Mason University. Dr. Leeman’s research and teaching center on the sociopolitical dimensions of language, with a particular focus on multilingualism, the status and use of Spanish in the United States, and the teaching of Spanish as a heritage language. Her interdisciplinary scholarship integrates theoretical and methodological approaches from critical applied linguistics and sociolinguistics, while drawing on insights from education, Latinx studies, language policy, and linguistic anthropology.
In this talk, Dr. Leeman will offer a comprehensive exploration of critical language awareness in language education, arguing that training in critical language pedagogies is essential for all language educators. Her work has significantly shaped contemporary understandings of language education as a site of social justice, highlighting the role of language teaching in addressing issues of equity and power in multilingual contexts.
