Time: 08:00 PM
Location: Black Box Theatre
Theatre Fairfield is proud to present the world premiere of Authenticity by John Morogiello which we commissioned for this year's Theatre in the Raw: The Lucille Lortel Festival of New Plays. Authenticity opens Thursday, December 5, at 8:00 PM in the Wien BlackBox Experimental Theatre at the Quick Center. Additional performances are Saturday, December 7, at 8:00 PM and Sunday, December 8, at 2:00 PM. Tickets are on sale at the Quick Center Box office and are $10 for university staff & seniors, $5 for all students, $18 general admission, and, as always, free for our faculty (but you still need a ticket, so please call the box office!).
Authenticity is a flight of historical fantasy about who REALLY wrote Titus Andronicus, a play usually attributed to William Shakespeare although scholars believe that at least part of it might have been written by George Peele, a contemporary of Shakespeare's known for his bloody revenge tragedies, of which Titus is a doozy! Morogiello's play, which bounces wildly between the 1590s and the present day, features mother-daughter sleuths who investigate a mysterious manuscript that calls into question Shakespeare's authorship. But is the manuscript authentic? Their quest to discover the truth involves comic intrigue, hilarious flashbacks featuring a young Will Shakespeare, and a delightful feminist twist that may help them rewrite history! There is also at least one swashbuckling sword fight to add to the merriment.
The play is directed and dramaturged by Jackob G. Hofmann, who worked with Morogiello in developing the plot. The cast features Kiersten Bjork, '21, Paul Bova, '20, Bronwyn Cullen, '23, Jack Esposito, '21, Martha Hegley, '20, Park Lytle, '21, Declan Quigley, '22, and Emily Ramsey, '20. Fallon Sullivan, '20, and Carlin Fournier, '22, are stage managing and are co-fight captains for the fight choreography devised by Dan Burke.
The show is an elaborately staged reading (yes, with sword fights!) which features post-show talkbacks with the playwright, director, and special guests following every performance. Dean Richard Greenwald of the College of Arts and Sciences is graciously providing refreshments for the talkbacks so you can enjoy coffee, tea, and goodies as you chat and chew to discuss the play.
Tickets are on sale now--buy them soon before the show sells out! Call or go to the Quick Center Box Office, X 4010.
As always, see you at the theatre!
