Tradition and Folklore as a Point of Departure
October 24 | 5 -7pm | Diffley Board Room in Bellarmine
Dr. Agustín Israel Barrera García (Seville, Spain 1980) approaches tradition and folklore through a self-critical conscience. He holds a Ph.D. in Art History and a B.A. in Fine Arts with a specialization in painting and design, as well as a postgraduate certificate in Cultural Affairs. His research on feria and semana santa posters of Seville resulted in his thesis “The Image of Seville and its Festivities; Contemporary Creators” and serves as a great inspiration to his creative work. He explores different media sources such as video, photography, painting, and art installation in order to re-appropriate traditional representations of his city. In this direction, we will highlight the importance of some iconic elements in his work: the capirote, the lunares and the Curro mascot of Seville expo92. In addition to that, in this presentation, we will also look into his incursion in the world of comic books and the web series, as well as the inclusion of international textile for a recent project.
