Cybersecurity Tips: Lessons Learned from TikTok Lawsuit, Stay Proactive to Protect your Family

On August 2nd, the DOJ and FTC sued TikTok for violating COPPA (Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act) by allowing children under 13 to create accounts and collect their data without parental consent. FTC Chair Lina Khan highlighted the risk to millions of children’s safety.

TikTok denied the allegations, claiming they are outdated and citing efforts to protect children, including age-appropriate experiences and privacy features. This followed a 2019 $5.7 million fine for similar issues.

Tips to Protect Your Family Online

  • Enable Parental Controls: Use TikTok’s Family Pairing.
  • Educate About Privacy: Teach kids not to share personal information.
  • Monitor Activity: Check your child's online interactions.
  • Use Age-Appropriate Platforms: Ensure platforms are suitable for their age.

Stay proactive to protect your family's online privacy.
